Energy is a key concern for most of us. Our physical resilience is about flexibility in our own physiology.
Resiliency is a term that is used a lot and for good reason. The current circumstances in the world challenge all of us in extraordinary ways. We’re needing to be more resourceful than usual to manage our mental and physical health and we’re learning to surf, even if we can’t stop the waves. For that we need to understand what’s going on in the body and equip ourselves with the right tools.
Resilience as a term has been overused and diluted down whereas its definition and meaning runs deep. ‘Bounce back’ is an overly simplistic term of resiliency. Being resilient is more about negotiating, managing, adapting and ultimately being flexible in our physical and mental resources.
Mental resilience includes perceiving stress in a more positive way, seeing it as a challenge that we are able to over-come, and from that we can become wiser and stronger.
Emotional resilience is around our emotional self-regulation. Our breathing is key here to control our physiology, which is why biofeedback devices like Heartmath are so effective.
Spiritual resilience is about our purpose, our self-awareness, our priorities and values.
Our physical resilience is about flexibility in our own physiology. Allostatic load is describes the stress which creates wear and tear to the body. They key here is perception and behaviour to reduce the allostatic load. When stressed, do we reach for a sugary treat and a cigarette, or do we seek a healthy strategy like going for a walk.
Every day we have a multitude of choices to create our health. By having the right health tool kit to hand we can learn to surf those waves.
