Once upon a time I was a supplement junkie. This has slowly changed the more I understand and read on the issue of supplementation on the human body. As with science, we operate on a reductionist level, reducing down single compounds seeking the magic bullet. We study what they do in isolation, not looking at the effect of what they do holistically. We forget that food compounds work in synergy, and our body is designed to respond directly to this.
Your body will take in whatever you choose to give it. Yet what will occur over time if you choose unwisely, is an eventual body structure (musculo-skeletal, cellular) that is manufactured out of poor quality materials. You will feel this in ill health.
Where supplementation is required is in the case of deficiency and/or imbalances. When choosing supplements, less is more and whole food based is best. But designing your own supplement regime and stacking supplements is a hazardous business. Better yet, have a qualified health practitioner work this out for you, working from the basis of diet first.
Science is catching on and what I believe we will see in the coming years are studies that demonstrate the hazards of supplement taking. Read on, and start making wiser decisions.
